PRESENTING RESULTS FROM INSHIP PROJECT ON THE GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

On June 9, 2021, the INSHIP team actively participated in the 4th Global Conference on Education and Research which was virtually hosted by University of South Florida, Florida, USA. The main topic of our presentation was teaching practice in pre-service teacher education. Prof. Dr. Mojca Juriševič presented the results of the project INSHIP on the comparative analysis of teaching practice in four European countries (Spain, Slovenia, Germany and the Czech Republic).

The abstract entitled “Teaching Practice in Pre-Service Teacher Education: A Comparative Analysis in Four European Countries” was also published in the conference proceedings.

EXPERIENCE WITH TEACHING PRACTICE IN THE EDUCATIONAL CENTRE IN SPAIN

EXPERIENCE WITH TEACHING PRACTICE IN THE EDUCATIONAL CENTRE IN SPAIN

TEACHING PRACTICE AT THE PADRE MANJÓN-ELDA SCHOOL

Despite the difficulties in this course due to the pandemic, we have continued to accept teacher trainees at our educational centre – it is one of the centres with the highest demand for student teacher internships in our city. In fact, by the end of this course, we will have a total of twenty-one teacher trainees.

The practicum is a time of discovery for teacher trainees – in some cases, it is their first real experience of the profession they wish to pursue in the future.

Our main goal is to supervise students’ learning to complete their training as well as possible. To do so, students observe different levels and groups during their internship so they can get a broader perspective and have access to the training, resources, and all the management and organizational meetings that the other teachers hold. We also organize special sessions with the management and guidance teams. The selection of the tutor who will supervise the student is also important. We always start with volunteer personnel, and although we take on many trainees, there is always someone on the ‘waiting list’. The centre’s staff are used to seeing internship students during different stages of the course and working and collaborating with them.

students during different stages of the course and working and collaborating with them. The centre is large with numerous students, a significant proportion of whom are those with special educational needs; hence, having an extra set of hands and eyes in the classroom always helps. We try to ensure that the internship students take on a semi-teaching role, advising them in the development of their activities.

The following photos represent some examples of a regular day’s activities where both the trainees and tutor are encouraged to play an active role in teaching the students.

The management team meets with the trainees at the start and at the end of the internship. We are keen for their assessment and thoughts about their experience at our centre. As a reminder, we give them a personalized letter (sample provided below), which they value as it gives them a greater sense of belonging to the centre.

First Learning, Teaching and Training Activity

First Learning, Teaching and Training Activity

In June 2021, the first learning, teaching and training activity (LTT) was organized by the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Education. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the event was held in a virtual environment on Zoom on five separate days. Three days were organized internationally, with participants from Slovenia, Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic. Two days were held in a national team, with participants from each partner institution.

The main objective of the INSHIP seminar I was to learn, reflect, discuss and receive feedback from the participants, i.e. academic staff, about the INSHIP model and the future INSHIP course that is being developed as part of the project with the aim of educating academic staff in supporting student teachers in high quality teaching practice.

The main topics of the LTT were evaluation in teaching practice and the CANVAS model, best practices in teaching practice, with the analysis of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on teaching practice, conceptualization, identification and tips for the implementation of educational principles in teaching practice and professional competencies in teaching practice.

Although the event was held online, participants actively shared their experiences, opinions, and suggestions. In international seminars, participants worked in groups consisting of members from different countries, which proved to be effective and interesting. Some national meetings were organized face-to-face, others were held in a virtual environment.

Overall, the first learning, teaching and training activity was successful given the circumstances of the pandemic and the online implementation. We look forward to the second activity and keep our fingers crossed that we will be able to organize it face to face.

Fourth Transnational Project Meeting

Fourth Transnational Project Meeting

On 21st of May the fourth transnational project meeting was held in a virtual environment on Zoom. The meeting was hosted by the Universidad de Alicante in Spain.

The focus of the meeting was to review the INSHIP model with a specific highlight on professional socialization. The partners from Universidad de Alicante in Spain presented the work on professional socialization, outlined some key concepts, highlighted the main paradigms and stages in the professional socialization of teachers and highlighted some key aspects to reflect on professional socialization.

The partners also discussed the content of the questionnaire in the comparative study on pre-service students’ perspectives on teaching practice and further project activities.

Finally, the partners from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Education, presented the draft of the INSHIP Seminar I. The partners agreed on the content and organizational aspects of the seminar, which will be held as an online event in June due to the epidemic measures. We are looking forward to the implementation of the seminar.

Overall, this meeting was successful and effective, with a wide variety of content and topics discussed.

Teaching practice in the framework of pre-service teacher education in Slovenia

Teaching practice in the framework of pre-service teacher education in Slovenia

In Slovenia there are three public universities offering study programmes in teacher education. The faculties of education, which are located at the universities, are the main institutions for pre- and in-service teacher education. They offer study programmes in pre-school and primary school and some programmes for two-subject teachers. In addition, there are some study programmes at other faculties, that also offer some teacher education programmes, especially for subject teachers in various academic and art domains, and in physical education. At the University of Ljubljana, about 10% of the students are involved in teacher education programmes.

The teaching practice in schools is a compulsory part of the education in the reformed Bologna study programmes. It is organised and carried out according to the principle of reflective practice and is intended to enable students to integrate subject-content and the pedagogical-professional knowledge through gradual introduction to teaching and the teaching profession. Teaching practice is organized differently in different study programmes: from four to ten weeks of teaching practice in undergraduate study programmes, and in some extend also at master level, mostly as a research work.

At the Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana, teaching practice has a rich history of 70 years. It is conceptualised based on theoretical and empirical research. Quality assurance in teaching practice has been ensured by the Faculty’s Teaching Practice Committee since 2014. Teaching practice in different study programmes is monitored and evaluated annually, both internally (by academic staff and mentors from schools) and externally (through the University’s evaluation system).
